Scientists believe they can explain why some people who catch COVID-19 develop chilblain-like lesions(凍瘡樣病變)on their toes and even fingers. The toes or fingers can look red or purple. Some have it for months, others for weeks. This condition is called“COVID toes",which may be the side effects of the body fighting off the virus. However, the people will have none of the common symptoms(癥狀)ofCOVID-19. such as the cough, fever and loss of or change in smell or taste.
COVID toes can happen at any age, but children and teenagers are more likely to develop this condition. Sofia, who is 13 and from Scotland, was hardly able to walk or wear shoes when she developed COVID toes earlier. Over the summer, she depended on a wheelchair for longer walks.
The researchers started to study the condition in the spring of 2020. They first studied 50 people with COVID toes and 13 others with chilblains that were not caused byCOVID-19. The latest study was based on blood and skin tests. which shows two parts of the immune system(免疫系統) in our body may play a role. Both of them help the body to fightCOVID-19. The study is continuing now.
One of the researchers. Dr Ivan Bristow from the UK said.“The findings may help with treatments. For most the condition usually goes away on their own after some time. But some may need treatments with creams(乳膏)and other medicines.”
Dr Veronique Bataille said COVID toes were seen very often during the early pandemic, but have been less common now. That's probably because more people have been vaccinated(接種疫苗).
