calm, quiet, still, silent
這幾個詞都與“靜”有關，但它們所表示靜的對相是不同的，所描述的物體、場合是不同的。
(1) calm 常指天氣平靜、無風，海無浪，心境鎮定，無憂慮，鎮靜自若，強調外表等。如：
The weather is calm and the sea is calm. 天氣和大海是一片寧靜。
Although she was frightened, she answered with a calm voice. 盡管她心里害怕，她回答問題時心里還是很鎮定。
(2) quiet “靜止的、寧靜的、沒有激動、煩惱、憂慮的、”，強調沒有擾亂，沒有興奮活動或鬧聲的“寧靜”或“心神安逸”。如：
Ask the children to make less noise and keep quiet. 讓孩子們小點聲，保持安靜。
(3) still “靜止不動”、“平靜”，突出不發出動作。如：
Please stand still while I am ready to take the photograph. 站著別動，我給你們照相。
It was very late and the night was still. 更深夜靜。
(4)silent “聲音極小的”、“沉默的”、“寡言的”。如：
John is a silent, thoughtful boy. 約瀚是個不愛講話，喜歡思考的孩子。
The house was silent because everyone was asleep. 房子里很安靜，所有的人都睡著了。
